Used by light cavalry, this big "pocket" was not very useful to carry something. It was most a protection for the left leg of the cavalryman, and also a nice piece of these very particular uniforms specific to light cavalry, but also mounted artllery and some staff officers....

La cavalerie légère était dotée de cet équipement ainsi que l'artillerie montée, sans compter certains aides de camps et officiers supérieurs qui portaient la tenue "à la hussarde".
