Bayonet for Chassepot rifle, made during second Empire. Used later by German army?
During the defeat of 1870, the German army extensively emptied French arsenals and appropriated the stocks of weapons surrendered by the vanquished.
Some Chassepot bayonets were re-marked with typical German army markings, while others were erased or altered.
The model we are offering bears markings that do not correspond to those of French cutlers; we therefore deduce, perhaps incorrectly, that this weapon was re-assigned to the German army.
Very good condition.
