Probably from a misunderstanding, the pelican regurgitates its catch in the beak of its young, was born the fable of the pelican piercing its chest to feed its young with its own blood.
Christian iconography has taken up this fable to make the bird a symbol of the Passion suffered by Christ for the redemption of humanity.
