GRANDE GUERRE DE 1914/1918, 1ère GM

  • Infantryman of the 66th Line Infantry Regiment, September 1915. Replica uniform, period portable equipment.

Our client wished to pay tribute to his great-grandfather, killed during the Second Battle of Champagne, which included the Third Battle of Artois, in September 1915.
The main challenge was relying on period illustrations and surviving artifacts clearly dated to that era.

Indeed, the second half of 1915 was a period of extremely difficult supply.
The authorities had anticipated a short war, but it became bogged down in the trenches. The textile industry was located in German-occupied territory, forcing the army to resort to substitute products, to ersatz—a German word.
They made do with whatever they could find. Some went to the front wearing their own corduroy trousers and civilian boots.
They fashioned webbing from tent canvas and covered canteens with heavy, bluish canvas.

So much so that the French military authorities contacted their German counterparts, asking them to kindly refrain from executing, as spies, the French soldiers captured in what was practically civilian clothing. Despite the atrocious barbarity of the killings, certain rules remain acceptable between long-time enemies... While regulation uniforms pose no problem—we simply recreate the same "standardized" uniforms, based on reliable sources—we mustn't give the impression of dressing our infantryman like a vagrant by slapping him with anything resembling period civilian and military equipment—that would be a bit simplistic.
Therefore, we focused on incorporating period elements into this uniform, elements that we could find, consistent with photographs from that era, sometimes originating from families where they had been preserved. If we had to recreate them, we always used period materials. The whole project required a great deal of research, but the request came from one of our most loyal clients, and we were delighted to fulfill it and explore a different historical period. Mr. Vauvillier's plates depicting the field uniform of an early 1915 line infantryman proved to be particularly well-made and comprehensive.
Our client's ancestor was killed at the end of September, and the major changes to the uniforms that followed began in October!

We also created a uniform of the 66th Line Infantry Regiment during the Empire period for the same client.

  • WW I. French bayonet for Berthier rifle + Flask + leather belt

    Lot including:

Bayonet for a Berthier rifle, in excavated condition.

    Canteen without fabric lining.

Objects particularly emblematic of the Great War.

The canteen contained the "pinard" ration that helped soldiers endure the trenches. Every trick was used to increase the ration.

Some put beans in it to swell in water, others fired a blank cartridge into it with their Lebel rifle.
Sometimes it burst, sometimes it gave a little bonus.
Memories recounted by Maurice Guinhut, a soldier in 1914.

The braided belt is typical of the Great War. It was unregulated work done by recruits who knew how to work leather and sometimes had a lot of free time.

  • Vintage tan leather shoelaces, new old stock, made in France by Éts David. Price per pair

Thickness 2.20 mm x 2.70 mm on average, so not exactly square.
We found these laces in bundles, all attached to the leather plate from which they were cut (see last image), a very, very long time ago.
Length 80 cm. Limited quantity. The leather seems very strong, even when pulled on roughly—we tried it.

But if it's over 100 years old, it might not be the best choice for reenactment. In any case, we cannot guarantee its use for that purpose should it break.

  • Puffs for naval caps = Regulation pompoms for bachis approved in 1915

This type of pompom was approved by the maritime authorities in 1915.
The border features loops that one would not expect to find on sailors' pompoms.
Until 1870, the color of the pompoms, also called "shock absorbers" because their function was to cushion the impact of bumping one's head in the gangways, was blue and red!
The regulation of March 27, 1858, even specifies:
"This puff is composed of 112 strands of blue thread and 76 strands of madder thread."
The puff remained two-tone until February 21, 1870. The regulation then specified that it was composed of "150 strands of madder thread." The sailor's red pompom is therefore a relatively recent appearance, and its purchase or manufacture often remained the responsibility of the sailor, who was supposed to have time at sea... Except when repainting the boat, which was a major occupation for sailors.
In short, pompoms of extremely varied types can be found, and depending on the fashions of the time, sailors delighted in wearing designs that were quite different from the standards of the time.
Here are a few notable examples.

  • Puffs for naval caps = Regulation pompoms for bachis, 1913 model and before. Non-contractual photo. Price by one

As you can see on the sample plate (not for sale) from the port of Rochefort dated 1913, this type of pompom was approved by the maritime authorities.
The border features loops that one would not expect to find on sailors' pompoms.
Until 1870, the color of the pompoms, also called "shock absorbers" because their function was to cushion the impact of bumping one's head in the gangways, was blue and red!

  • Jacket of cadet of Saint Cyr (officers school), with black armband (WWI ?)

Includes a jacket, moth-eaten and unstitched at the collar (see photos), oxydized buttons to clean if you wish to do so yourself.
On the left arm, a mourning armband, not specific to the Great War, since it was already authorized by regulations in the late 19th century, to be worn on the left arm in cases of family mourning.
There was, of course, mourning among the military even before the Great War, but few French families were untouched by the death of a loved one in combat, starting in 1914. It was likely during this period that the wearer of this uniform added this mark of mourning to their uniform.

    Waist measurement: 74 cm.

  • Blackened buttons for generals. WWI

Very quickly the beautiful shiny buttons were "neutralized" to avoid continuing to make the snipers happy.

  • FRANCE WWI. Half ball BLACKENED buttons for artillry, 10 and 15 mm. Old stock

Very old stock, but good condition, manufactured by David company during the First World War
They will be perfect to complete old outfits or for re-creations.
The 10 mm diameter buttons were used to attach the chinstraps of kepis, with buckles or with tabs on the back.
They can also be used for waistcoats, with metal buckle on the back.
From 1915, following the considerable losses of the French army, due in particular to the uniforms that were too flashy, the buttons were neutralized by blackening them, so that they would not shine, as was the case with the gold buttons, which made the enemy snipers happy
