FRANCE. 1870–1871 War Commemorative Medal
A bronze medal engraved by Georges Lemaire; the obverse depicts the profile of a helmeted Marianne bearing the features of Mademoiselle Fernande Dubois—an artist at the Opéra-Comique—while the reverse bears the inscription "Aux défenseurs de la Patrie" (To the Defenders of the Fatherland) and the dates "1870–1871." Established by the law of November 9, 1911, it was awarded to combatants of the 1870–1871 war who could prove their military service in France or Algeria between July 1870 and February 1871, inclusive. The ribbon symbolically combines the black of mourning for the defeat with the green of hope for the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France.
