Model 1854 rifleman's or reserve cavalry saber, with scabbard (nickel-plated?).

  1. Out of stock

The Model 1854 saber is a French cavalry saber for troops and officers.
It was adopted by the Carabinieri in 1854, marking a return to the straight blade for heavy cavalry.
It was later adopted by the reserve cavalry, then by the dragoons.
Originally measuring 100 cm, the blade was reduced to 975 mm for the dragoons, then further shortened after the 1870 war.

On July 13, 1882, it was decided that reserve cavalry and dragoon sabers would be shortened by 5 cm and that the lower strap of the scabbard would be removed. The names were changed to “sabre de cavalerie de réserve mle 1854 transformé” and “sabre de dragon mle 1854 transformé”.

They were officially discontinued in 1883. 2-ring scabbard, apparently nickel-plated, good condition.
930 mm straight blade in cast steel, 3.4 cm heel, domed and engraved back (engraving difficult to read), triangular sections, four hollow sides, diamond-shaped bevel and symmetrical tip.
Numerous markings on the hilt.
