Under the First Empire, these ends were angled at approximately 45 degrees.
Following the proclamation of the Second Empire, small eagles replaced the palm fronds on the crown surmounting the cross.

Losses to the white enamel, two bent points, and partial loss of blue enamel around the eagle on the reverse side.
These flaws are not visible when worn on the chest; they will not be distracting on a mannequin or in a reenactment setting, and it is an authentic medal offered at a very reasonable price.

These clover-shaped fittings—originally intended for the Republican Guard—were never finished; they date back over 60 years.
The section designed to hold the button is not stitched down. Some feature clips on the back, while others do not.
There is some oxidation on a few of them; although they were never used, the passage of 60 years has inevitably taken its toll.

Genuine opera hats

Why the name "opera hat"?
A top hat with a mechanical spring.
This hat can be flattened with a simple press, making it easy to store in the cloakrooms of theaters, opera houses, and restaurants.
It could even be slipped under a seat when folded, thus avoiding obstructing the view of those behind the hat-wearing spectators.
To open it, you must hold the brim firmly and give it a sharp downward movement; the brim pops up with a sharp snapping sound.
The brim is usually made of black satin, silk, or cotton.
Unfortunately, antique top hats are designed for much smaller head sizes than those of 21st-century men. You can still find them for children or women, and they're not very expensive; for adults, they're rarer... and more expensive. At the time of posting, we have hats available in sizes 52, 53, and 57. They are all in good condition.
The size 52 comes with its box, which is detached into several pieces but is present and may be repairable. It is marked with the same name as the one inscribed on the hat's crown in gold lettering: Col à Clermont. A sheet from the "Journal des tirages financiers" dated December 6, 1923, is also included.
The size 53 is from P.B. in Paris.
The size 57 is from Aigon, 3 rue Crémieux in Nîmes.

Red enameled stars for the wounded. Made by Ets David before 1928. Price per unit

WOUNDED STAR. WOUNDED BADGE. We are offering a limited stock from the David company, which bears an inventory entry dated February 1928; these stars are therefore of earlier manufacture. They measure 1 cm from point to point, are red enamel on a brass background, and have two attachment tabs on the back.
This badge was created during the conflicts of the First World War, by decree of July 27, 1916.
It is a five-pointed star, enameled in bright red, which is placed on the ribbon of the commemorative medal for the campaign in which the wound was received.
For each wound, a red star was added to the ribbon.
The ribbon, on a white background, has seven vertical stripes, including a central red stripe, bordered on either side by a yellow stripe, a blue stripe, and a wider blue stripe at the edge.

When the Great War Commemorative Medal was created in 1920, the star (or stars) symbolizing wounds was placed on the ribbon. This practice continued in subsequent conflicts. In fact, the decoration (cloth and medal) was no longer to be worn as a separate unit once the medal for the specific conflict was created and the star was added to the cloth. With the recent creation of the French Commemorative Medal (decree of October 9, 1995), this technical issue is resolved. However, the fact that this medal is systematically awarded for all operations leads to the application of the same rule when participation in a particular conflict is rewarded with the Overseas Medal. This is an insignia, not a medal. The number of stars worn corresponds to the number of wounds.

Tricolor knitted bands - Old French manufacturing - Per meter

Mayoral sashes are now made from ribbons very similar to those used for inaugurations.

Previously, they were made of knit fabric, which conformed better to the shape of the body and could be worn across the body or around the waist.
During the French Revolution, the People's Commissars wore tricolor sashes.
We have found a limited amount of this knit fabric in the stock of Éts David, which is both stable in its width and flexible in its length. Take advantage of this opportunity.

Manufacturer: Nicolas, 82 Rue des Petits Champs, Place Vendôme. Produced during the Third Republic, this is the model known as the 1852–1870 pattern.
The metal parts show oxidation, except for the anchors, which were protected by their gilding. Otherwise, the condition is impeccable.

World War II era.

Very rare hussar officer's sash belts conforming to the 1845 regulations. Antique pieces.

Model used from 1845 to 1854.
This type of belt was therefore used under Louis Philippe period, then during Presidence and at the beginning of Second Empire.

However, virtually no examples remain.
Those we are offering come from the stock of the David company, active from approximately 1848 to 1960.
The red cords are locally damaged (sold as is, price reflects this), the metal of the braid has tarnished slightly, but these are very rare examples of hussar uniforms, and they are often the missing element needed to complete a mannequin.
The measurements indicated in the extract from the official journal are indeed those of the pieces we are offering for sale.
They are entirely accurate.

French cutlass, 1833 type, original guard, replaced blade, marked MF, new scabbard

Regulation saber issued to the French Navy from 1833, with a good original hilt, duly stamped, in its original condition.

The blade is not original, it has been replaced with a shorter (cm) and lighter blade, engraved at the ricasso, "HAL," like the end of "KlingentHAL."
It should be kept as is with replacement blade. The hilt is good, perhaps one day you will find a good blade for a saber with a damaged hilt and will be able to replace it?
We have included a good replica of the scabbard, with its small white leather tab, for use in reenactment.

Senior officer light cavalry sabre, 3 rd republic before 1882.

A fine light cavalry officer's saber. The scabbard with two rings indicates production prior to 1882. The blade, described as "commercial" and unmarked, is in very good condition. The scabbard is quite heavily oxidized and would benefit from a good cleaning. The guard is in good, original condition, both the grip and the bronze parts.

This type of saber could be purchased by officers in the department stores of the time; therefore, they are neither numbered nor engraved with an indication of their assignment. A fine piece, in original condition, with minor oxidation from attic storage. The blade has a well-defined fuller.

The canteen contained the "pinard" ration that helped soldiers endure the trenches. Every trick was used to increase the ration.

Some put beans in it to swell in water, others fired a blank cartridge into it with their Lebel rifle.
Sometimes it burst, sometimes it gave a little bonus.
Memories recounted by Maurice Guinhut, a soldier in 1914.

The braided belt is typical of the Great War. It was unregulated work done by recruits who knew how to work leather and sometimes had a lot of free time.

Finally, in 1979, for the sake of simplification, senior non-commissioned officers and majors received the same dagger (white handle) as officers. A variant was introduced in 1979.

Gilt bronze hilt, single-branch guard decorated with Jupiter's flaming thunderbolt and laurel branches.
Crown decorated with Jupiter's winged thunderbolt. Double guard with a fixed front section molded in relief with an oak branch and a laurel branch resting on a bundle of six flags. Three silver stars are riveted to the guard, marking the rank of Major General.
The counter-guard is decorated with an oak branch and a laurel branch tied together with a ribbon. Decorated ferrules.
Tortoiseshell grip, minor damage not very noticeable.
Otherwise in fair condition. total length 100 cm, blade 84 cm.

Briquet sabre, PRADIER, cutler in Paris from 1816 to 1835. Without scabbard

Good, solid 28-fluted hilt of the type used during the Napoleonic era.
Hallmarked with a "B" surmounted by a crown (?) on the blade's ricasso.
Used in this version until the Second Empire. Overall length 74 cm, including a 59.5 cm blade marked "Pradier".
No scabbard. In original condition. A good piece. It could be cleaned if you wish to do so yourself.


This was kind of the "Swiss Army knife" of the Empire soldier. It was used to chop wood as well as to cut up food. Although they were absolutely useless when fighting against cavalry sabres, infantrymen would nevertheless hold on to it. Complies with contemporary rules.

Uniform of a medical officer cadet. Pre-1971. Including jacket, red breeches, and belt.

Several prestigious French universities maintain a strong military tradition, reflected in the wearing of a uniform, sometimes almost identical to that worn in the second half of the 19th century. This contributes significantly to the charm of the Bastille Day parades, where we see students from the École Polytechnique, Saint-Cyr, and a few others marching in close formation, carrying sabers or swords, and sporting charmingly old-fashioned headgear such as bicornes or plumed shakos, just like in bygone days.

Until 1970, students training to become military doctors wore a uniform very similar to that of Polytechnique, which is not surprising since it seems that the École Polytechnique copied the future doctors' attire. For these students, the collar and cuffs are crimson velvet, and a caduceus is embroidered on each side of the collar. The breeches are red. Former students refer to it as the "Pinder" uniform (like the circus of the same name, whose costumes are rather...flashy).

This uniform was discontinued in 1971 after the merger of the Lyon and Bordeaux schools.
It was worn with a bicorn hat, which we don't currently have available.
Very good condition. Fits a chest measurement of 90 cm and a waist measurement of 72 cm (very slim!).

Set of 2 swords: senior naval officer of Restoration period + junior officer of Second Empire.

The Restoration-era naval officer's sword has a pommel engraved with a fleur-de-lis, a feature reserved for high-ranking officers' swords. The mother-of-pearl inlays are missing, and the sword primarily needs a thorough cleaning. The blade is covered with a layer of rust, which is not too difficult to remove. It is engraved with the inscription "Manufacture Royale de Klingenthal" accompanied by attractive engravings. The Second Empire junior officer's sword has a beautiful acid-etched blade, more typical of a Second Empire or early Third Republic civil servant's sword. The push button that allows the guard to be flipped up is present and functional; otherwise, it is in good condition. No scabbard; price reflects this.

The red epaulettes are new and come from Éts David.

They are not sewn (see picture) for a few centimeters in the area where the buttons are located.

The other epaulettes come from Éts Peignon, a costume maker in Nantes that operated from the Second Empire until the early 2000s. Their stock contained some real gems... We were there during their liquidation sales.
The two white trefoils are not actually a pair; the fastening systems are slightly different, which is not noticeable once installed.

The two blue ones underneath are also very slightly different, but they are not visible side by side on the uniform. Price reflects this.

To present their products to their customers, Ets David sometimes grouped them into presentation boxes, which were visible at the head office and could also be shipped to customers or presented by traveling salespeople.
We are offering one of these surviving boxes. Only one is available for sale.
The tassels are dusty, and some fringes may have been shortened.
The top box contains a few models for fez.
Underneath are black thread tassels in bad condition.
All of this is sold as is.

Old shako, officer cadet of Saint Cyr, with a plaque in the 1872 pattern.

With the fall of the Second Empire, it became clear that the eagle badge could no longer be used for officer cadets' headgear. A transitional model was therefore adopted, a rather rare design, as it was quickly replaced by the badge we know today, consisting of a grenade above a band marked "École Spéciale Militaire" (Special Military School). The shako is made of heavy cardboard covered in cloth, without interior lining or chin straps, and the plume is not the correct type. Otherwise, it is in good condition.

A disassembled epaulette of a "Re-enlisted Non-Commissioned Officer of the Line Infantry and Engineers" from November 1909, accompanied by its standard model card from the Ministry of War.
Another epaulette of a Foreign Legion enlisted man, in mint condition, sent following the call for tenders of April 14, 1954. Interesting for documentary purposes, rare examples of selection procedures throughout the 20th century.

30 x 25 mm marine belt buckle fronts. Price per unit

In the David Company's warehouse, we found a box containing hundreds of small brass plaques, 30 x 25 mm in size, intended to adorn belt loops for the navy or marine infantry. They were never finished, but these small plaques are very decorative and could be incorporated into naval-themed displays. We leave it to you to decide how you might use them. The price is very low, and the quality of details is excellent.

Vintage tan leather shoelaces, new old stock, made in France by Éts David. Price per pair

Thickness 2.20 mm x 2.70 mm on average, so not exactly square.
We found these laces in bundles, all attached to the leather plate from which they were cut (see last image), a very, very long time ago.
Length 80 cm. Limited quantity. The leather seems very strong, even when pulled on roughly—we tried it.

But if it's over 100 years old, it might not be the best choice for reenactment. In any case, we cannot guarantee its use for that purpose should it break.

In the enormous stock from Éts David, we found a number of officers' belts in their original boxes.

In particular, French officers' belts, without prongs, typical of the 1930s. These are privately purchased models.
The outer leather is in near-new condition; the inner leather lining is sometimes slightly stained after decades of storage. This is not noticeable when worn.
The boxes are all damaged on one or more sides; we are selling them as is.
The lengths indicated, which are those printed inside the belts, correspond to the maximum length at which the belt can be worn comfortably. Slightly shorter than the size you choose, it will fit without any problem if you intend to lose weight... And in the event of a future pregnancy, the belt will not get bigger with you.

Belt that belonged to an officer named Meyer, assigned to a field artillery regiment, the 66th Lothring (Lothring, like Lotharingia, according to the 843 borders), based in Saint-Avold, which was located in Germany and belonged to the XVI Army Corps. This is a military antique, both German and French, a testament to a turbulent period on the borders of Europe.
Some foxing on the heavy canvas lining, otherwise in good condition.

These shoulder pads have never been worn, but over time they may have gotten dirty or the thread may have shown localized signs of weakness, we are selling them as is.

3 african weapons

It's not brand new, it could use a good cleaning, but it's inexpensive.

The cross-shaped sword is a Tuareg takouba, the weapon of choice for warriors, some of whom were still wearing chainmail and other equipment used by knights during the Crusades at the beginning of the 20th century, equipment that had somehow ended up in Africa.
Sometimes takoubas are fitted with good old European blades, but that's not the case here.
The sword with its checkered scabbard is quite impressive for a collector.
We're also including a dagger with a flaming blade, which, contrary to some false claims, wasn't designed to make straight holes when its user was trembling!
Its scabbard is made of engraved black leather. For a beginner's collection, it's quite eclectic and worth a look.

In short, sailors often purchased their pompoms with their own money, and you can come across extremely varied types of pompoms. Depending on the fashions of the time, sailors enjoyed wearing models that were quite different from the standards of the time.

Until 1870, the color of the pompoms, also called "shock absorbers" because their function was to cushion the impact of bumping one's head on the gangways, was blue and red!
The regulation of March 27, 1858, even specified:
"This puff is composed of 112 strands of blue thread and 76 strands of madder thread."
The puff remained two-tone until February 21, 1870. The regulation then specified that it was composed of "150 strands of madder thread."
The sailor's red pompom is therefore a relatively recent appearance, and its purchase or manufacture often remained the responsibility of the sailor, who was expected to have time at sea, possibly to do it himself...

Among the supplies we acquired from Ets David, there were pieces that needed finishing, but were never finished because the model was discontinued or the market was taken over by a competitor.
The stamped pieces we offer are of very high quality, but the fastening system that allowed them to be used was never welded to the back.
Each plate still has a beautiful effect for creating maritime-themed decorations...or any other use you may find pleasing.
We deliver them to you with a layer of oxidation that is about a hundred years old.
We cleaned the one in the middle of the photo (cleaning product for brass + brush + 5 minutes) as an example, but the condition in which we deliver these plates is that of the other plates in the photo.

First Empire model ship's/boarding saber with 1833 model blade and new scabbard

Rare ship's or boarding saber with a First Empire pattern hilt (a pinhead-sized hole in the shell is noteworthy). The quillon is cut into a palmette, a characteristic of the First Empire.
675 mm curved blade with markings on the spine: "Manuf de Chatellerault...", which remain illegible. Rust and talc on the blade, easily cleaned.
Chatellerault manufactured the blades for the boarding sabers between 1835 and 1861, so the blade is indeed of the 1833 pattern.
It no longer has any visible punch marks and has been thoroughly cleaned; the two regulatory anchors are, however, visible on both sides.
When the ship's saber pattern was changed in 1833, not all the sabers of the earlier pattern were put away! They continued to be used until the stock was exhausted, even if defective blades had to be replaced. This allowed us to find a few sabers modified in this way, which were less expensive than the (very) rare 100% original pieces.

The scabbard is a new one, for use in reenactment.
Michel Petard states in his book "Le sabre d'abordage" (The Boarding Saber) that no scabbard of the Year IX model has survived.

The "Peticolin" model is molded from fiberglass-reinforced polyester.
It features a stamped brass plaque bearing the inscription "SAPEURS POMPIERS INDRE ET LOIRE."
The headgear interior is complete. The second helmet is derived from the Adrian model. It is in near-new condition, but without the plaque.

Includes a jacket, moth-eaten and unstitched at the collar (see photos), oxydized buttons to clean if you wish to do so yourself.
On the left arm, a mourning armband, not specific to the Great War, since it was already authorized by regulations in the late 19th century, to be worn on the left arm in cases of family mourning.
There was, of course, mourning among the military even before the Great War, but few French families were untouched by the death of a loved one in combat, starting in 1914. It was likely during this period that the wearer of this uniform added this mark of mourning to their uniform.

Waist measurement: 74 cm.
Chest measurement: 88 cm. (for a very slim person!)

Made in the second half of the 19th century, it was designed to hold a sword or bayonet. A fine piece of "buffle" leather, 23 cm high and 8 cm wide. Belt loop: 6 cm.

Why 75 cm?
Because that's the maximum length you'll need to trim the cuffs of a jacket.
A cap circumference will be 65 cm at most, including the seam.
You'll only lose a few cm by buying 75 cm in lengths; buying per meter would be much more troublesome for this rare metal braid, produced by David around 1900.
Width 64 mm. This braid is particularly heavy; note the direction of the striations: vertical for gold, horizontal for silver.
It's about a hundred years old, so it's not without its small stains, which will make it even more consistent on old outfits or hairstyles.

Probably from a misunderstanding, the pelican regurgitates its catch in the beak of its young, was born the fable of the pelican piercing its chest to feed its young with its own blood.

Sword for artistical fencing

Unusual type of sword for artistical fencing.
Handle is particularly elaborate, the cup to protect the hands is of a model never encountered before, in a somewhat Art Deco style.
The blade is indeed a good fencing blade, designed for combat...but old, which means that it can last 10 years or break from the first touches, so we cannot guarantee it.
Two copies on sale.

Heavy cavalry sabre for officer. Circa 1900

Our first impression when we first held this sword was rather negative.
The leather of the scabbard is very fine, roughly finished, and its trimmings are really thin for a military weapon, we were leaning towards a good piece, equipped with a totally adequate scabbard. Except that this saber is equipped with a rush blade, not common, and that the cover is of a specific model to allow the passage of such a blade.
After all, it has been a long time since the sabers that equip our military no longer have any combat function.
This saber is therefore probably a so-called "commercial" model which was originally equipped with a light scabbard, the leather of which has been redone.
The saber and scabbard assembly weighs only 853 grams. Its total length is 100 cm.
Beautiful chiseled bronze handle, very pleasing to see. Uncommon

Proposal of swordknot to accompany General Lassale's saber.

General Lassale's original saber is accompanied, in its display case at Les Invalides, by a very complicated swordknot which ends with numerous tassels decorated with fragments of red coral.
We have given up on offering such a strap which could have cost half the price of the sword and is not necessarily of interest to collectors of swords.
On the other hand, we found in the old stocks of the David Establishments, straps ending in a tassel in a shape very close to those which sometimes adorned the sabers of the Mamluks.
These swordknots are not very expensive and the model is interesting.

The patterns on the buttons were chiseled, gilded, then attached to the ball button.
A work of goldsmith, carried out a hundred years ago by T.W§W in Paris , suppliers to the armies.
Around button, 2inscriptionss: "15 de Novembro de 1889" and " Estados Unidos do Brazil".
Inside is a 5 branches star, surrounded by a laurel crown. In central icrcle 4 étoiles symbolised constellation of south cross. 27 stars represent 26 bresilian states and federal district.
Diameter 14 mm. Extremely decorative, especially when size is not artificially increased by picture..

The quality of the productions of the time is impressive, compared to current serial productions "made in Asia".
Small trace of discoloration, difficult to see, on one edge, much less visible than the sweat marks which affect necklaces worn regularly.

Médaille en bronze, gravée par Georges Lemaire, dont l'avers représente le profil de Marianne casquée sous les traits de mademoiselle Fernande Dubois, artiste de l’Opéra-comique et le revers portant la légende « Aux défenseurs de la Patrie » et le millésime « 1870-1871 ». Elle fut créée par la loi du 9 novembre 1911, décernée aux combattants de la guerre de 1870-1871 qui justifiaient de leur présence sous les drapeaux, en France ou en Algérie, entre les mois de juillet 1870 et de février 1871 inclus. Le ruban associe symboliquement le noir du deuil de la défaite et le vert de l'espérance du retour de l'Alsace-Lorraine à la France.

Eclaireurs de France: Hat, 31 small flags, insignias and card

"Eclaireurs de France" are a kind of scouts.

All these small flags were collected just after WWII while travelleing in all europe by a french "eclaireur".

Veste de camouflage armée française, taille 96 C, fabriquée en 1995.

Nous avons racheté à un militaire en retraite une douzaine de ces vestes, dans un état encore tout à fait convenable.
Cela méritait d'être mis en ligne.
Pour un tour de poitrine de 96 cm maximum, et une taille maximale de 180 cm.

Souvenirs portraits: 10 th regiment artillry et 11 th cuirassier

Vers la fin du XIX ème siècle et jusqu'à la guerre de 14, il était de bon ton de se faire tirer le portrait, et de faire incruster son visage dans l'image d'un soldat de son régiment mis en scène dans une espèce d'allégorie du régiment en pleine action.
Cela donne des images naïves, mais qui nous renseignent aussi sur les us et coutumes de l'époque, le matériel utilisé, son evolution...Etc. il est aussi parfois émouvant de retrouver la trace des hommes ainsi mis en scène.
Nous vous proposons 2 portraits.
Un soldat (nom inconnu) du 10 ème d'artillerie, (cadre 59 X 51 cm), postérieur à 1915, car on y voit un casque adrian au dessus de l'écusson en haut à droite, au dessus du drapeau national.
Celui du cavalier Robinot, du 11 ème cuir, le portrait (cadre 45 X 57 cm) est plus ancien, le biplan qui survole le champ de bataille doit être un des 1ers "aéroplanes" mis en service.
Pas cher, le prix comprend l'emballage renforcé pour éviter la casse. Petite fêlure du verre dans l'angle supérieur droit du cadre du cuirassier (voir image), vendu en l'état

A priori il s'agit d'un modèle de l'armée tunisienne, mais il semble que l'armée turque ait eu un modèle très proche vers la fin du XIX ème/début XXème.
Rien d'étonnant à cela, il s'agit de symboles très répandus dans les pays arabes et la Tunisie a fait partie de l'empire ottoman.

FRANCE. Crescents for tabs and kepis, for spahi and noth african officers collar, price by one.

Collars and kepis of spahis officers were adorned by such crescent, first embroidered, then in stamped brass during war time .
Such uniforms were described in book of Laurent Mirouze, "L'armée française dans la 1 ère guerre mondiale", tome 1, pages 404 and 405.
We found some original pieces in very good condition.

Chaque broderie fait 5 cm de long sur 2 de large, nous la livrons sur sa bande de tissu de 8 cm de large (à l'endroit le plus large) sur 15 cm de long
